Author Clive Cussler was the best
Just great entertainment! I had this DVD for years but it disappeared so I bought it again so we can watch it from time to time. I wish they would make more Dirk Pitt movies.

Fun Movie . . . . . But
I would have to say for a comedy it's okay. The action is pretty good except the violence was made PG when I was expecting something more; it was like, watching an Alfred Hitchcock movie where the violence is suppressed and inferred like shooting someone from around the corner where you would not see it but would hear the gun shot.I liked Mathew McConaughey for his acting, humor and actions. I really liked Penelope Cruz for her acting and her beauty, all the other actors I felt fell by the wayside. Yes some of the supporting actors where okay but not great, the good thing was that there poor acting skills did not effect the overall impression of the movie. The story was farfetched; but, since it a fiction action film, it doesn't matter, that is what artistic license is for, telling a story that has no facts in reality and you can go anywhere with it. Aside from the story line, I liked the movie in general, the scenes and the editing of the scenes made the movie more interesting and appealing; I only got board once, during the montage of the office with all the pictures; I literally moved the movie ahead a few frames to get past that boring part, after that everything was fine, the movie was well paced, kept me interested and entertained, I liked the interaction between the characters except for the part where Mathew, Penelope and Steven Zahn, are traveling across the desert and Penelope asks how the two know each other, why repeat what was shown in the montage at the beginning of the movie, seriously? Pretty lame.I give this movie four stars because of what I said previously. I would not pay money to see it in a theater but I would rent it like I did.

A Great Action Film Worthy of a Franchise!
Breck Eisner’s 2005 film, “Sahara,” adapts the 1992 novel of the same name by Clive Cussler. In the story, Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey), Al Girodino (Steve Zahn), retired Admiral James Sandecker (William H. Macy), and retired Commander Rudi Gunn (Rainn Wilson) work for the NUMA organization to recover sunken antiquities and shipwrecks. While in Africa, Dirk starts looking for a Confederate ironclad that fled Virginia near the end of the Civil War laden down with gold and supposedly made it to West Africa. Along the way, they must help Dr. Eva Rojas (Penélope Cruz), a doctor with the WHO, who discovered what appears to be a plague spreading through the water in Mali. Her investigation raises the hackles of local warlord General Kazim (Lennie James) and Yves Massarde (Lambert Wilson), a businessman working with General Kazim, so Dirk and Al must postpone their search for the Confederate gold to help Dr. Rojas uncover the cause of the plague. The production on this film is wonderful, with great character development, tense action scenes, and some real comedy. It’s everything a movie viewer could want in an action flick. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there will be a sequel anytime soon, which is a pity as McConaughey, Zahn, and Macy make a good team.

Dreadful film
If you're looking for a slam-bang Indiana Jones style piece of family entertainment, give this a miss. Awful music (wailing guitar solos totally out of keeping with the visuals); leaden script that echoes as it hits the ground; actors bored with their own performance, and the whole thing generally aimed at 13 yr-olds.I wasn't expecting Tolstoy here. I like Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Mummy, even High Road to China with Tom Selleck (which gets universally panned) but this one was so appalling we managed 15 minutes, then switched it off and watched Escape to the Country instead (young couple from Pinner seeking a better life in Shropshire with their two cats. Much more entertaining).

"You do throw like a girl!" [Dirk]
This 2005 action adventure movie features Dirk Pitt [Matthew McConaughey] and Al Giordino [Steve Zahn] as a pair of treasure seekers currently trying to find the location of an American Civil war river boat. Acting on new information they head to Africa where they soon encounter Dr. Eva Rojas [Penélope Cruz] who reluctantly joins their upriver excursion. This action packed movie has a great opening scene as the ship escapes the war before jumping to modern times. The search involves them in civil wars, plagues, roaming bandits, dodgy dealings, damsels in distress and an unforgiving environment. Youngsters will enjoy the action but adults may dislike the unrealistic plot but if you liked films such as `King Solomons Mines', `Jewel in the Crown' or `Romancing the Stone', or even the `Librarian' series then this should be right up your street. This 12 rated disc has no special features other than normal play, scene selection and subtitles [with hard of hearing selection] but the action is `adventurous' and comic rather than gore and is a good family movie deserving of *****.

The film is nonsense but great fun. No serious violence just old fashioned adventure
I sent for this as I have just read the book. The plot is a bit different from the book, as in the book they were researching the red algae pollution and not looking for the ship. I could not really follow how the ship was in the desert. The film is nonsense but great fun. No serious violence just old fashioned adventure. I would recommend it.

Action from Start to Finish
Excellent, This is one of the books made into a film by Clive Cussler with the Dirk Pitt saga. A pity there can't be a lot more made into film. The only downfall is the books always read better. There is action from start to finish a film you can watch over and over on your own or with the family.

More american claptrap.
Complete nonsense from beginning to end. Shallow and amateurish...for the most part veering on the side of pure farce. Weak characters and the cast do not gel, nor is there any chemistry. Possibly the most tedious two hours ever endured.
